Sekforde Street takes its name from an Elizabethan man of law, Thomas Sekford (1517-1587) who bequeathed a part of his Clerkenwell estate. He was a lawyer and MP under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The estate (as we know it) began its redevelopment in the late 1820's with the layout of the street designed by C.R. Cokerall (surveyor) and his assistant James Noble.

The houses were mainly occupied by skilled craftspeople, typically engaged in jewellery, clock and watch making, working precious metals, building, and printing. Sekforde Street was the most important of the streets laid out on the Sekforde Estate in the late 1820's and is currently the best preserved, still retaining most of its original houses.
